Transport to and from walks is mostly by private vehicle (car pooling), but we may also use public transport or a charter bus. For interstate trips we may use hire cars.
Car Pooling using Private Vehicles
Transport to and from most of our walks is by private vehicle, in which case we will try to arrange car-pooling. We prefer to minimise the number of vehicles and their environmental impact. We can’t guarantee to provide car-pooling for all walkers without a car, but we will try.
When you book in to the walk, on the booking form you will need to enter your car-pooling requirements such as whether you need a lift or are able to offer your vehicle for car-pooling. Drivers who are able to take passengers are very much appreciated.
A few days before the walk, the leader will email the group with car-pooling details. The leader may allocate passengers to drivers or request that drivers and passengers arrange their own car-pooling using the contact details provided. Where possible, a driver is allocated passengers living nearby or along the route. If a driver and passenger(s) aren’t close by, passengers must find their way to a meeting point that is convenient for the driver. Unless otherwise agreed between the driver and passengers, drivers return passengers to the same meeting place after the walk.
Drivers are reimbursed at $0.40 per km, plus any tolls incurred, divided by the total number of people in the car. Some drivers may choose to charge less, but it should not be more. For example, a 200km return car trip for a driver plus three passengers, maximum reimbursement is = $0.40 * 200km / 4 people = $20 per passenger.
Please pay your driver on the day. Please discuss the preferred method of payment with your driver. Credit card facilities are NOT available for car-pooling costs.
Public Transport
Some walks start at a public transport stop (e.g. train station) in which case you can travel there by public transport. We won’t organise car-pooling for these walks because everyone has the option to use public transport.
Public transport may also be used to return from the end of the walk to the starting point, in which case all participants will need a Myki (this will be indicated in the walk description).
Bus Trips
For bus trips, we hire a charter bus to take the group to and from the walk. The bus will depart from a location in the CBD but there may be a second pickup point in the suburbs, depending on the direction of travel. All walkers will need to pay a fee to cover the bus hire. For these walks, we won’t accept walkers wanting to travel to the walk by private vehicle.
Hire Cars
For interstate trips, we may hire cars to enable us to travel to and from day walks.
