Beginners pack carry – Beeripmo
Expired
Trip Overview – pack carry
This rewarding two day walk winds through cool fern gullies and tall forests, taking in views across the surrounding hills of both Mount Cole and Buangor State park.
The track offers extensive views of Mt Langi Ghiran, the Grampians to the south towards Mt Cole and the Western Plains. The track is well defined and sign posted and the walk has been designed for those seeking a relaxing walk with time to take in the beautiful surrounds.
Given the distance involved, it is suitable as a beginners pack carry, but please do not underestimate the walk; you will climb up hills, and weather may be cool.
This is a pack carry; you’ll have to carry everything on your back! Hint: Carry no more than 15 kilos if you can. You will need to carry sufficient water; around five litres should be enough.
You will need to bring warm clothing, a sleeping bag and tent, food and snacks for four meals.
I do not intend to undertake this hike in case of bad weather; so excessive rain, wind or even cold means it will be called off.
Itinerary and Walk Descriptions
Friday, 23 September 2022. (Grand Final Friday)
Beaufort is around a 90 minute drive from Melbourne. We will meet at 12:00 pm and then depart for the hike. Please arrive early if you would like to have coffee, although please be aware that Beaufort serves the worlds most awful coffee. The cafes and eateries in the town have colluded to ensure their coffee is a weak, luke-warm runny mixture of congealed milk, dishwater and coffee grounds that seem to have been reused. None of these establishments wish to differentiate themselves from their competition by offering prompt service at a reasonable price, so you might find yourself waiting a long time for the cup of brownish substance you wish to consume.
We walk for around 11 ks on the first day, intending to arrive at our camp site around 5.00 pm.
We will then talk about how bad the coffee at Beaufort was, hiking trips and other adventures we have all undertaken, and generally relax in the Australian bush. Bring your own drinks, dinner and card games. We will also have a campfire.
Saturday, 24 September 2022 (Grand Final Day)
A leisurely departure of 9.00 am is in store; we aim to arrive back at the cars about lunch time.
Housekeeping
Gaitors are very useful to protect you in the unfortunate (and unlikely) event of snakebite.
Please note that I intend to leave on time. I do not wait for latecomers, so if you decide to be late, it will be on you to catch up to us.
You will need to self supply all meals, all snacks and drinks. There is a tank at the campsite for water refills; bring aquatabs.
Lunch on Friday: You can probably pick up something in Beaufort such as a salad sandwich or roll if you dare. Given our start time of 12.00, you should have lunch before hand, but bring snacks for the afternoon. I’m genuinely unsure just ‘what’ will be open in Beaufort given it is a public holiday.
Dinner: Something light, such as a salad is good and should withstand the hike. Or try out hiking food if you have some form of cooker.
I will have a JetBoil for hot water if you are a beginner and not completely equipped as yet. (The JetBoil boils water extremely quickly). You’ll at least be able to try out hiking food (which you can buy from all genuine outdoor stores) and have a hot drink.
Breakfast: Bars and fruit are easy to carry and should survive the trip.
Lunch on Saturday: We may not need lunch; suggest something light to see you through.
Transport
Transport to and from the walk location is by car. If you don’t have a car, we can’t guarantee to provide you with a lift – this will depend on available drivers and their locations.
Drivers can choose whether they wish to take passengers or not. However, there is a train to Beaufort at the very least; we should be able to drive you from there. Please make your own enquiries if this option appeals. You’ll need to obviously choose a train that gets you there on time.
Passengers must pay the driver their share of car-pooling costs as described on the Car-pooling page. Please discuss the preferred method of payment with your driver.
