Club Night May 2nd 2023: “Tramping in NZ- the WOW factor”!

Expired

In an encore performance we welcome Bruce Meincke back to introduce us to the rewards and the challenges of tramping in New Zealand to places with a ‘Wow Factor’.

Bruce first started bushwalking with the club in August 1964. He then went on to lead his first YHA pack carry in 1967 and his first YHA extended pack carry on the Tasmanian Overland Track in 1967.

The first YHA member to receive the Bushwalking and Mountain-craft Leadership Certificate, Bruce has gone on to specialise in leading Victorian high country winter walks, as well as walks in Tasmania, NSW and New Zealand, the latter being the focus of tonight’s presentation.

So, what is the ‘wow factor’? It is a place or location where you look out at the scenery and feel this is a wonderful place with breathtaking views or vistas. New Zealand has many of these places with snow covered mountain peaks, lakes, spectacular river valleys, waterfalls, dense lush rainforests and interesting flowers and birds. Sometimes to get to these places it requires tramping for up to five days over snow covered passes and crossing flooded rivers, so l have included a difficulty factor. Going to these places in winter conditions certainly increases the wow factor but also the difficulty.

Come with us this evening as we cross the ditch to explore some of the glorious places in national parks such as Tongariro, Nelson Lakes and Egmont in the land of the “long, white cloud”.
