Meet Anthony Paulin, our first speaker on astrophotography for club night!
He is a software architect by day and an astrophotographer by night who loves nature, science, and the night sky, and is also pretty active in trying to protect it.
Originally from Belgium, Anthony fell in love with Australia about a decade ago and now calls it home. He has been an active member of the Astronomical Society of Victoria (ASV) for the last five years, contributing mainly to the Astrophotography and Computing sections.
Anthony also builds practical tools for fellow astrophotographers and maintains a website listing locations for photography of the night sky. You can explore his stunning astrophotography on his website https://anthonypaulin.com/ and follow his journey on Instagram @le.galaxy.hitchhiker.
Tonight’s club night will consist of two parts:
7.30pm to 8.30pm – The Presentation will be fairly broad and beginner-friendly. It starts with a quick introduction to some basic photography concepts including focal length, aperture, exposure time, and ISO.
From there, he will cover:
- Different ways of photographing the night sky
- What can actually be achieved with a phone, camera, tripod, or telescope
- Beginner and budget equipment
- A few simple techniques people can try out themselves
- Light pollution and why protecting the Australian night sky matters.
8.30pm to 9.30pm – The hands-on camera clinic follows right after at the nearby Yarra Park. As we’ll be in a fairly light-polluted environment, there will obviously be some limitations, but Anthony will do his best to give people some sense of wonder about the night sky (and we might even spot Saturn and Venus, depending on the timing and surrounding landscape).
While he obviously can’t bring all his gear, he’ll be bringing along a small smart telescope, a few cameras, binoculars, and tripods. He’s very happy for people to try out some of the equipment and see what works best for them.
Attendees can bring a tripod and their camera or phone.
