Falls Creek Snowshoeing – Accommodated Weekend

Trip Overview

Do you like the snow, but don’t want to sleep in it? I made this trip for you.

We will be snowshoeing around Falls Creek during the day and relaxing at our accommodation in the evening!

Whilst the length of distance each day will likely be no more than 10km, in snowshoeing terms that’s a long distance. Snowshoeing is more tiring than every day hill walking, the combination of showshoes, elevation, extra layers and sometimes harsh conditions (snow, sleet, wind, whiteouts) and can be tiring on legs and soul. But the peace of the alpine is worth it.

Accommodation cost (refer Trip Price below) includes breakfast and dinner at Howman’s Gap.

Other costs are:

+ resort entry/parking per car per day, shared between passengers (est $65 per car, per day)

+ snowshoe hire (if you don’t have any, est $45 for the weekend, hiring in bright)

+ chain hire (if driver doesn’t own their own) shared amongst passengers

+ car-pooling costs (refer Transport, below)

Accommodation

YMCA Howman’s Gap Discovery Camp,
2587 Bogong High Plains Rd, Falls Creek.

We’ll be staying in bunk rooms with traditional ”school-camp” vibes (2-3 people per room).

Itinerary and Walk Descriptions

Friday 14th August

We suggest you take the Friday off work to allow for the long drive to Falls Creek.

We’ll be trying to slim down to minimum cars at Bright to get to drive up the mountain, this is because of parking limitations at Howmans, and needing snow chains, and needing drivers confident in using them.

Arrive at YMCA Howman’s Gap Discovery Camp on Friday night. If you get there by 6pm then dinner is provided.

Saturday – Sunday, 15-16 August

Saturday and Sunday will involve snowshoeing around Falls Creek. Each morning we will get into 2-3 cars and drive to Falls Creek parking at Windy Corner.

Areas we will explore (more detailed itinerary to come):

  • Rocky Valley Lake
  • Panorama Corner
  • Some of the way to Mt McKay along Sun Valley/Pretty Valley roads.
  • Some of the Ropers Trail and Heathy spur
  • With plenty of time for hot chocolate/coffee at cafes, apres and other snow fun.

We will finish up early afternoon Sunday in order for people to drive home.

Transport

Transport to and from the walk location is by car. Please indicate your transport requirements and preferences on the booking request form when you book in.
