Alpine National Park (Tawonga Hut & The Fainters): Formal Dinner Walk

Postponed

NOTE:  This trip has been postponed due to the bushfire risk in that area.  The new date has been decided yet.

Walk Description

Celebrate the Australia Day Weekend and Chinese Lunar New Year together in 2020.  Whet your appetite with some scenic high country walking, then feast amidst snowgums and historic huts.

An important note first:  we are calling this a base-camp because you’ll camp at the same place for the duration of the trip, but getting to and from the campsite will involve walking 4km / 1.5 hours along a management vehicle track.   Hence an overnight pack is recommended, although you could get away with carrying some things in a sturdy bag.   For walks from the campsite, either bring a separate day pack or use your lightly-loaded overnight pack.

Tawonga Huts

Saturday:  Depart Melbourne 6.30am, drive to Falls Creek, park at Pretty Valley dam.   Walk to Tawonga Huts, set up camp then 10km walk (day-pack) to Westons Hut.   Formal dinner Saturday evening.

Sunday: Day walk to Mt Jaithmathang and the Fainters (16km).

Monday: Pack-up, return to cars, possible short walks to Pretty Valley SEC hut and Mt McKay, lunch in Mt Beauty then drive home.

For the formal dinner:  Bring something to get dressed up in (eg jacket, tie, lightweight top or dress to wear over thermals) along with food and drink to share amongst the group.   The organiser will coordinate to make sure there is a good mix of savouries and sweets.

Booking is  required for this walk.  The Leader will confirm your acceptance onto the walk via an email.  A few days before the walk, the leader will organise car-pooling and provide details of where and when to meet.

It is expected that anyone undertaking an overnight walk has at least the experience and equipment necessary to comfortably complete a “medium” graded day walk.   If you are new to overnight camping, please refer to our Gear Checklist page or discuss with the leader.   Some equipment (eg tents, stoves) can be borrowed or shared provided you advise the leader of this when booking.

Booking Fee:

Please pay the leader CASH at the start of the walk, NO credit cards.

Passengers must pay the driver their share of car-pooling costs as described on the Car-pooling page. Please bring cash for this purpose.
