Hobart Accommodated Trip: Grand Final Weekend
Expired
Trip Overview
Sensational hiking, wonderful bars and restaurants, the historic city of Hobart and of course, your friends, both old and new. It’s a trip where you arrange your own accommodation, so you can arrive when you like, and leave when you like. The walks are accessible from Hobart either by public transport or taxi.
Accommodation
You must organize your own accommodation. A YHA Hostel exists in Hobart and is well serviced. Alternatively you can stay at another hostel, an Airbnb or a hotel or motel.
We can put you in touch with others if you wish to share, but YHA Bushwalking won’t do any more than that. If you indicate you would like to share, it is rather bad form if you pull out and don’t pay your fellow hikers for your share of the booking; so please check your schedule carefully.
Transport
We will travel to and from the walks each day by public transport or taxi.
You will need to arrange your own transportation to and from Hobart. Flights can be surprisingly cheap if you find a deal – but when I checked, they generally seemed to come in at around $250 return. Note that this is grand final weekend, so best to book in advance, as many people may be making the trip and prices will probably go up.
Please note that if you decide to hike on the day of your departure, the risk is yours; I don’t know the area very well and simply cannot predict that we will be back in time for late afternoon flights, especially given the vagaries of public transport or taxi transport. If you do decide to fly back on the day of one of the hikes, please book your flight late.
Itinerary and Walk Descriptions
Wednesday, 25 September: Arrive in Hobart
Thursday, 26 September: Urban Hike
12-15 kilometres // 3-4 hours // Easy
Urban hike around Hobart. We aim to finish around 3 pm, before making our way back to town either by bus or taxi.
Friday, 27 September: Mount Montagu and Wellington Falls Circuit
15 kilometres // Hard
A stunning walk starting in the south eastern border, ascending quite quickly up to Cathedral Rock and making it’s way along the ridge line to Mont Montagu. The trail crosses the North West Bay River after Montagu and leads you down the steep Siphon Track. This is a long walk with plenty of sites to sit and enjoy.
Saturday, 28 September: Waterworks to the Springs via Pipeline Track
14 km // Medium-Hard // Out and Back // Alltrails
A fantastic hike close to Hobart, commencing from the reservoirs within the Waterworks Reserve and heading to the Springs. You will be treated to mountain scenery, superb vantage points, river crossings and waterfalls.
Sunday, 29 September: Mount Wellington and O’Grady’s Falls via Fern Tree
15 kilometres // Hard // Alltrails
There are many walks in the Mount Wellington area; this walk combines several of them. Starting from Fern Tree carpark, we pass the Silver Falls, and ascend the mountain using Middle, Radford’s Pinnacle and Zig Zag tracks. We then descend via the Panorama Track
