Leading the way: Navigation using phone apps- Club Night 4 October 2022

Expired

I think we would all agree that one of the qualities most valued in a walks leader is their ability to navigate and not get the group too lost!

While physical maps and good map reading and compass skills are still the mainstay of any walk, especially those in more remote areas or difficult terrain, these days there are other options available to assist in leading the way.

One of these is using phone apps, of which there are many to choose from.

Tonight we will have the opportunity to learn more about these apps: which ones to download, how to use them effectively, and what are both the benefits and limitations of this form of navigation.

Craig Beer is one of YHA BWC’s most well-known and active walks leaders, and the worthy recipient of this year’s Jonas Lea Award.

Joining the club around 2010, Craig has been leading walks for over 8 years and has been responsible for bringing us so many fantastic experiences, ranging from day walks, summer urban meanders, hikes and dinners and, perhaps most notably, the ever-popular accommodated multi-day trips.

Of these, who could forget such rippers as Mt Buller, Harrietville, The Grampians, Mt Kosciuszko, the Sydney/Blue Mountains and Brisbane/Sunshine Coast Easter trips?

Many of us will have walked with Craig on more than one occasion, and, apart from some of his woeful dad jokes and mind-numbing train trivia, he is noted for his thorough preparedness for a walk by having the trail mapped out on his phone to use as a reference.

Please join us for some hands-on instruction about the digital world of navigation, which may inspire you to experiment for yourselves in getting around with phone in hand. (Make sure you bring yours on the night).
