Mt Feathertop: North by Northwest CANCELLED

Cancelled

Distance: 9.5km + 9.5km

Walk Description

This walk is a rare opportunity to visit Mt Feathertop, Victoria’s second highest peak, via two lesser used routes, Northwest Spur and the Northern Razorback.   The 9km 1100m ascent via Northwest Spur starts at the Harrietville trout farm and passes MUMC hut before ending at a junction with Razorback track.   After camping overnight at Federation Hut, it’s up to Mt Feathertops 1922m summit (with full packs!), then continuing down the other side along the North Razorback track.   Probably the least used of Feathertop’s access routes, North Razorback has some fine views of its own as you walk along a ridge overlooking the Ovens Valley before finishing at a car 7.5km (500m descent) from the summit.

This walk is graded “hard” as there is a 1200m ascent via Northwest Spur.   Participants should have some previous experience of alpine pack-carries.  If you’ve comfortably walked Feathertop via Bungalow Spur, it is worth attempting this, but note that Northwest Spur is steeper.   The itinerary is subject to being reversed if Sunday’s weather isn’t forecast to be favourable for walking the exposed summit route.   For harder-graded walks such as this, the leader has the right not to accept bookings from anyone they consider is not sufficiently fit or experienced to undertake it, so please provide as much relevant information as you can when booking.

Booking is  required for this walk.  The Leader will confirm your acceptance onto the walk via an email.  A few days before the walk, the leader will organise car-pooling and provide details of where and when to meet.

Booking Fee:

Please pay the leader CASH at the start of the walk, NO credit cards.

Passengers must pay the driver their share of car-pooling costs as described on the Car-pooling page. Please bring cash for this purpose.
