Walking Since 1939

Navigation Training Day at Chewton CANCELLED

Cancelled

Distance: 10km

Walk Description

Opportunity to develop your map and compass navigation skills off track in open bushland near Chewton.  The distance for the day will be less than ten kilometres, but it will be mostly off track, and may include one or more short, steep climbs.  It will also include a lot of stopping to discuss and practice navigation skills.

Maps:  Victoria Topographical Map 1:25,000  ‘Chewton’.  Copies will be supplied for the day.

Directions for Drivers:  Take the Calder Freeway north-west to the exit onto the B180 Highway to Castlemaine, 109 kilometres from Melbourne.  Meet just past the exit at 10.15am.

Proceed from there in convoy.

Starting point for the day is near the Railway Dam, off to the left, approximately 3 kilometres past the exit.

Clothes and Equipment: This is essentially an off track exercise, so a strong pair of comfortable boots and gaiters would be ideal.  And bring a warm jacket and your waterproof jacket just in case.

You’ll need a compass, although please don’t go out and buy one without speaking with me first.  I do have a few spare compasses that can be used on the day.

Food:  You will need lunch and munchies.

Water:  Bring water for the day.  Suggest at least one litre.

There may not be any water on route.

Transport:  Car pooling to be arranged by leader.
