Walking Since 1939

High Lead Carpark to Powelltown

Closed

Distance: 14.5 km

Walk Description

This is a one way walk with a car shuffle starting at the High Lead carpark and ending in Powelltown.  It takes in the last section of the multi day “Walk into History” walk as well as the “Reids Tramline Walk”.

The first part of the walk follows the Latrobe River, crossing it numerous times before arriving at ‘The Bump’, the divide between the Little Yarra and Latrobe Rivers. This site is also known for ‘The Bump Tunnel’, an historic railway tunnel constructed in 1925. Spanning 313 metres in length, the tunnel was constructed to avoid winching up the existing steep inclines. Evidence of the tunnel can be seen along the walk. Here the track leaves the Latrobe and joins the Little Yarra River, where it heads towards Powelltown. We then follow the  historic Reids Tramline from the eastern end of Powelltown to the site of Reids Mill. Along the way, lengths of the old tramline can be seen, and relics of the old sawmill remain at the mill site. Three bridge crossings over the Little Yarra River are included in the walk.
