Castlemaine – Sailors Gully and the Welsh Village


Distance: 11km

Bookings are not required for this walk, just turn up at:   8:45am   Flagstaff station forecourt (corner William and Latrobe Sts, CBD).

The leader will organise car-pooling and provide directions to the location of the walk.  There is free all-day parking nearby if your vehicle isn’t needed for transport.

If you are not a member of YHA Bushwalking, the cost is $7 plus any share of car-pooling as described on the Joining a Walk page.

Walk Description

A circuit walk through the Castlemaine’s historic gold mining area, visiting Garfield Water Wheel,
Expedition Pass Reservoir (lunch) and the Welsh Village.   Lots of old water races, stone ruins, mine shafts and empty
quarries to see along the way.

What to bring

• Day pack
• Sufficient water (2 litres, more on hot summer days)
• Lunch and snacks
• Hat, sun screen
• Suitable outdoor clothing (no jeans/sneakers!)
• Rainwear & warm jacket
• Proper walking shoes/boots
