Walk Description

Starting from the township of Blackwood in the heart of Wombat State Forest, this walk follows a track along Lerderderg River to  The Tunnel. This is a long tunnel cut through solid rock by miners in the 1850s to divert the river from a bend and allow easier access to the gold-bearing riverbed. “The Tunnel” was excavated to divert the river flow under a spur to allow alluvial mining of the river bed.   At the Tunnel we cross the river, returning along the other bank via Byers Back track.
