Walking Since 1939

Warby Ranges

Expired

Trip Overview

Extending north from Glenrowan in Victoria’s north-east is a steeply scarped range known locally as the Warbys.  It is a magnificent weekend hideaway: open forest country dotted with clumps of ‘old man’ grass trees, a carpet of wild flowers, heaps of delightful gullies to explore, and from its ramparts, spectacular views of the endless plains to the north and Victoria’s rugged snow capped peaks to the south.

Two one-day walks are proposed from a base camp in the northern end of the Warby Ranges.  Neither of the proposed walks include any serious climbs or descents, but both are largely off track.

Itinerary and Walk Descriptions

Friday:  Melbourne to the Warby Ranges. It is approx 3 hours drive north of Melbourne. Set up camp at Spring Creek Picnic and Camping area.

Saturday:  Exploring the plateau’s eastern escarpment, Jubilee Falls, the picturesque Native Pine Gully, grass trees, kangaroos, and wild flowers galore.  Distance 16 kilometres.

Sunday:  Exploring three very pretty gullies in the north of the range, spectacular views from Mt Kilawarra, and more wild flowers! Distance 13 kilometres.

Water.  The Warby Range is in a relatively dry area north of the Great Divide and its creeks usually flow only for a few months each year after the winter and spring rains.  Walkers are advised to bring a good supply of water for the weekend.

Equipment:  The walks are mostly off track and strong boots and gaiters are recommended.

Food:  You will need food to cover breakfast on Saturday to lunch on Sunday.
