After a brief look at the historical events that shaped the maps we have today, our guest speaker Andrew Robinson will look at todays maps and navigation, including how GPS works and the use of Smartphones as navigation aids.

Andrew has worked in medical research and secondary education. He is also a self- confessed ‘map addict’: he started collecting maps at the age of 13, and has taught map reading and navigation in many contexts, including to the Army Reserve, Outdoor Education students and Bushwalking clubs. With the advent of electronic mapping, he took up Geocaching, and frequently adapts maps for GPS and Smartphone use.

In 2015, Andrew set up the Koonung Bushwalking Club Map Library, which stores map collections electronically and is available for use by walk leaders and members.  Recently, he has been conducting Smartphone Navigation training for bushwalking clubs and Bushwalking Victoria.

Andrew will speak on Maps and Navigation – from ancient rock carvings to today’s GPS and Smartphone era.
