Wilsons Prom Lighthouse

Trip Overview

An overnight pack-carry, staying two nights at the iconic Wilsons Prom lighthouse overlooking Bass Strait with views to parts of Tasmania.  During the second day we’ll do a side-trip to the southernmost point of the Australian mainland.

Saturday and Sunday nights are spent at the lighthouse, but as this isn’t a long weekend, participants will need to have the Monday (31st August) off.

** Due to some late cancellations, there are places available on this trip for participants with overnight pack-carrying experience **

Accommodation

Accommodation is in one of the lighthouse cottages, with 4-share bunk rooms, kitchen facilities and a cosy lounge area to relax in the evenings oblivious to whatever weather Bass Strait is dishing up outside.

You will need to bring your own sleeping bag, towel and food for two days.  (Or to put it another way, an overnight pack minus a tent, sleeping mat, stove and fuel).

Itinerary and Walk Descriptions

It is a minimum 20km walk to the lighthouse, with a moderate hill-climb.  This is not trivial, especially with an overnight pack, so don’t be lured by the attractive location into thinking it can be easily done without any previous overnight walk experience.   And whilst warm, dry accommodation and a hot shower await at the end of the walk, participants need to be adequately prepared for the possibility of cold, wet or windy conditions to get there.   Hence the medium-hard grading.

Saturday:  Aim to depart ~10am from Mt Oberon car-park, hence either an early start will be needed from Melbourne or organise your own accommodation nearby on Friday night.   Walking via the most direct route down the centre of the Prom, the distance is just under 20km for arrival at the lighthouse around 4pm.  If Saturday’s weather is fine but Monday’s forecast isn’t, we may walk in via the longer but more scenic Waterloo Bay route.

Sunday:  Return walk to South Point via Roaring Meg campsite (20km).

During free time Saturday or Sunday, the lighthouse itself is open to be explored.

Monday:  Depart ~8:30am.   If fine weather, return via Waterloo Bay (23km/7.5 hours) to Mt Oberon car-park.

Transport

Transport to and from the walk location is by car. Please indicate your transport requirements and preferences on the booking request form when you book in.

If you don’t have a car, we can’t guarantee to provide you with a lift – this will depend on available drivers and their locations.

Passengers must pay the driver their share of car-pooling costs as described on the Car-pooling page. Please discuss the preferred method of payment with your driver.

Booking

Booking is required for this walk. Please indicate what similar walks you have done recently (i.e. in the past few months) to give the leader confidence that you are capable of doing this one. Refer to Walking Grades which, in conjunction with the walk description, will help you assess whether you have the required walking fitness and experience to do this walk.

The Leader will confirm your acceptance on the walk, or not, via email.  The leader will provide details of where and when to meet.

Trip Price:
Members:  $290 + Booking fee (nil) = $290.
Non-members: $290 + Booking fee ($12) = $302.

Payment:
Members and non-members are required to pre-pay the full trip price for this event.
You can pay by Paypal or credit/debit card.

Cancellation and Refund Policy:
If you need to cancel, please advise the leader as soon as possible, so that someone else has the opportunity.
We will only be able to provide a refund if we can find a replacement for you; this particularly applies on this trip as the Club’s booking is for the entire cottage, so we won’t be able to obtain a partial refund for empty beds.
If we can find a replacement for you, we will provide a refund as follows:
. For cancellations received more than 7 days before the event, the refund will be the full trip price less $15.
. For cancellations received within 7 days of the event, the refund will be 75% of the trip price less $15.
There will be no refund if we can’t find a replacement for you or you are a “no-show”.
In the unlikely circumstance that the event needs to be cancelled for any reason (e.g. safety risks due to extreme weather conditions), we will only be able to provide refunds if the club receives a refund from the service provider according to their cancellation policy.

What to Bring

All the equipment, clothing, food and water you will need for the walks and overnight stays (refer Trip details above).

An overnight pack is required for this walk, albeit it can be on the smaller side (45-50l) as a tent and sleeping mat aren’t required.

Refer to our Gear Checklist page for more details, or discuss with the leader.  If you are not properly equipped, the walk leader can decide not to let you participate on this walk.

Emergency Club Contact

The emergency club contact for this walk is Ken.  The leader can provide you with the contact’s phone number, if you wish to pass this on to any friend/family member who may be concerned if you return late.

Safety and Ambulance Insurance

We strongly recommend that you have Ambulance cover. If conditions are hazardous, the walk may be cancelled. If any doubts at all, check your emails the night before and the morning of the event. For more details refer to Safety.
