Every hiker packs differently. Some obsess over grams, others prioritise warmth, and a few carry something that raises eyebrows at the trailhead. We asked two YHA Bushwalking Club Victoria regulars — Tanveer and Vebica — to open up their overnight packs and share exactly what goes in and why it earns its place.
TANVEER: THE PRAGMATIST
Tanveer’s kit is built around reliability and pulling double duty wherever possible.
His pack is an old-school Kathmandu Interloper 65L from around 2010. While heavier than the more modern models, Tanveer likes that it has an external pouch, which the modern versions have lost.
For a shelter, he uses the Black Wolf Mantis UL 2 tent that’s proven itself in high winds, although he admits the vestibule is tight on storage, and there’s not enough headroom to sit up comfortably. For sleeping, he uses a One Planet Cocoon (rated to -11C) and a Thermorest NeoAir mat. While this keeps him off the ground with good cushioning and easy inflation, he acknowledges that it can be noisy and prone to sliding on a slope. For a pillow, he stuffs his clothes into his sleeping bag cover. “It’s zero weight, but can be occasionally lumpy!”
On the stove, he runs a Soto on butane-propane mix. Water comes from an MSR Dromedary 4L bladder, filtered through a Sawyer Mini or treated with iodine tablets, depending on conditions.
For safety, Tanveer carries a Garmin inReach Explorer+, which provides satellite-enabled SMS, a built-in map display, and weather forecasts. His first aid kit is the pre-packed Equip Rec3, and his headlamp is a Zebralight, which is robust and waterproof.
Tanveer keeps it practical when it comes to clothing: a MacPac waterproof jacket (“good value without paying premium-brand prices”), an Aldi insulation layer (“cheap and surprisingly good“) and Salomon Quest 5 Gore-Tex boots (“can handle most conditions bar heavy snow or a serious downpour“).
His favourite gear item? Toe-warmers. Makes sense, given his love for snow hiking.
The novelty item he wouldn’t do without? A 1.5kg bear canister. “It saves your food and tent from rodents and also acts as a seat, chopping board and whatever imaginary use you can conjure.”
VEBICA: THE COMFORTIST
Vebica’s philosophy is warmth-first and waste-nothing. And she’s done the spreadsheet homework to back it up.
She recently upgraded from a beloved $50 marketplace Mont Canvas backpack (“everyone in YHA mocked it, but I loved that pack“) to a Mont Backcountry. Her shelter is the Mont Moondance 1P. She owns both the summer and winter versions, at a very practical 1.5kg. Her sleep system includes a Mont Zodiac 500 sleeping bag for warmer months and a Mont Spindrift for winter, paired with an Exped Synmat UL S sleeping mat and a Nemo Fillo Elite pillow. She’s not sacrificing sleep!
For cooking Vebica, uses a Jetboil fuelled by Jetboil canisters. Water is stored in squishy Nalgene or Platypus bottles, treated with Micropur tablets. Her RescueME PLB1 is her safety device of choice: “I don’t want to pay a monthly subscription when this will do the job in an emergency.“
For clothing Vebica has opted for the Mont Hydronaute jacket (long enough to cover her backside — “so the rain doesn’t get in your pants“), a Snowgum puffer, Mont fleece, and Keen Targhee boots chosen for one specific reason: very broad feet.
Food is where Vebica really shines. She builds an Excel spreadsheet for each trip, tracking calories and macros per meal per day, targeting at least 2,100 calories and 80–100g of protein. “I like having plenty of food.” One firm boundary: “I hate trail mix :)”
Her favourite piece of gear? A Grivel sit mat and a garbage bag inside her pack to keep her sleeping bag dry.
A novelty item that has proven useful? Wax food wrap: “It triples as a prep surface, plate, and leftovers wrap in one.”
