Walking Since 1939

The Burchell Trail – Beginners Pack Carry – Brisbane Ranges – Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend

Closed

The Burchell Trail is a great introduction to pack carrying with the terrain generally flat and gently sloping and only a small amount of elevation gains on climbs. The total walking distance is 35km with an average of around 10km per day…plenty of time to take in your surrounds and most importantly to enjoy a sleep in!

The Brisbane Ranges is one of the state’s richest wildflower habitats. Set in a low range of mountains dissected by rock gullies, the unusual geology of the Brisbane Ranges has preserved plants that have long since vanished from the region, together with a correspondingly diverse bird population and the greatest density of koalas in Victoria.

Our walk commences at Fridays Campground near Steiglitz in the Southern end of the Brisbane Ranges and takes us through to Boar Gully Campground in the North. Along the way we will camp at two hike-in only campsites – Old Mill and Little River.

ITINERARY

SAT 8 JUNE: Fridays to Old Mill (11.5km)

We will meet at Friday’s Campground at 9:30amfrom where we will undertake a car shuffle to our end-point at Boar Gull Campground ((approx. 40 km – 45min return trip). After completing our car shuffle our walk will start from Fridays campground at approximately 11:00am, walking through to Old Mill Campsite. Site includes non-flush toilet, fireplace and tank water. Water will be required to be treated before drinking. Firewood collection is not permitted. Campers are required to bring gas stove for cooking.

SUN 9 JUNE: Old Mill to Little River (13.5km)

Our second day sees us departing Old Mill Campground to Little River Campground. Site includes non-flush toilets, wood barbeque and tank water. Water will be required to be treated before drinking. Firewood collection is not permitted. Campers are required to bring gas stove for cooking.

MON 10 JUNE: Little River to Boar Gully (10km)

On our last day we walk from Little River Campground to Boar Gully Campground. We will then undertake a car shuffle back to Fridays Campground to collect remaining cars and then head home to Melbourne.

TRIP FEES

Please pay the leader CASH at the start of the walk, NO credit cards.  Camping fees are included.

CAR POOLING

In addition to paying for your camping and YHA trip fee, if you are carpooling you will also need to factor in reimbursement for your driver.

The reimbursement of costs to the driver is: $0.30 AUD per km, plus any tolls incurred, divided by the total number of people in the car (including the driver). Some drivers may choose to charge less, but it should not be more. A roundtrip from Melbourne CBD to Fridays Campground is 192km x $0.30 = $57.60 / 4 passengers = $14 ea. Please bring change to reimburse your driver.

GENERAL

Booking is  required for this walk.  The Leader will confirm your acceptance onto the walk via an email.  A few days before the walk, the leader will organise car-pooling and provide details of where and when to meet.

It is expected that anyone undertaking an overnight walk has at least the experience and equipment necessary to comfortably complete a “medium” graded day walk.   If you are new to overnight camping, please refer to our Gear Checklist page or discuss with the leader.   Some equipment (eg tents, stoves) can be borrowed or shared provided you advise the leader of this when booking.  For harder-graded walks, the leader has the right not to accept bookings from anyone they consider is not sufficiently fit or experienced to undertake it, so please provide as much relevant information as you can when booking.
