Walk Description

Map: Kosciuszko Alpine Area, Outdoor Recreation Guide 2nd Edition, 1: 50000

Walk Grade: Medium- Hard. Total distance: 87 km, Total walking time: 31 hours.
Rate: 4.0 km/hour, Climb rate: 350 m/hour

Water: Water is available at all the main rivers and creeks along the way and near the campsites. You will need a minimum water carrying capacity of approximately 3 litres.
Water should be treated using a SteriPEN or filter or purification tablets.

Cooking: You will need to carry a liquid fuel or a gas stove.

Type of country and weather conditions: Most of the walk is in an alpine environment and above 1500 m. Snow can be expected any time during the year even at Christmas time so be prepared for these conditions. We are more likely to experience very hot and sunny conditions so make sure you carry a sun hat and plenty of sunscreen.

Proposed Bushwalk:

Day1. Thursday 26th Dec.    Leave Melbourne early in the morning to arrive at the Round Mountain car park just off the Tooma Road, to start the bushwalk at 1.00 pm. You must take the Swampy Plains Creek Road sign posted Kiandra, Cabramurra.(21 km from Corryong). Allow a minimum of 6.5 hours to do the journey with appropriate stops on the way. Round Mountain car park – Round Mountain Trail – Pugilistic Creek – Derschkos Hut.
Camp: Derschkos Hut area. Distance:14.5 km.Walking time: 4.5 hrs.

Day 2. Friday 27th Dec. Derschkos Hut – Round Mountain Trail – Grey Mare Trail – climb Mt. Jagungal with packs – head south-east through open country crossing the Geehi River and Valentine River and then on to Mawsons Hut area.
Camp: Mawsons Hut  area. Distance: 14.5 km.  Walking time: 7 hrs

Day 3. Saturday 28th Dec. Day walk from Mawsons Hut. Brassy Mountain – Big Brassy Peak (1971 m) – Tin Hut – Gungartan Pass – Gungartan (2068 m) – The Kerries – Kerries Ridge – Mawsons Hut. Distance: 20 km  Walking time: 7 hrs

Day 4. Sunday 29th Dec.  Mawsons Hut – cross country to Valentine Hut – Valentine Trail – Grey Mare Hut – Camp at Grey Mare Hut. Distance:14 km.Walking time: 5.0hrs

Day 5. Monday 30th Dec. Grey Mare Hut – Grey Mare Trail – Round Mountain Trail.
Camp near a creek about 6 km north  past Puglistic Creek. Distance: 16 km. Walking time: 5 hrs.

Day 6. Tuesday 31st Dec. Camp near a creek about 6 km north  past Puglistic Creek –Round Mountain Trail – Round Mountain Hut – Round Mountain car park.  Distance: 8 km.   Walking time 2.5 hrs.
Depart for Melbourne about 11.00 am.
Expected arrival time back in Melbourne should be before 6.00 pm.

Booking:

Booking is  required for this walk.  The Leader will confirm your acceptance onto the walk via an email.  A few days before the walk, the leader will organise car-pooling and provide details of where and when to meet.

It is expected that anyone undertaking an overnight walk has at least the experience and equipment necessary to comfortably complete a “medium” graded day walk.   If you are new to overnight camping, please refer to our Gear Checklist page or discuss with the leader.   Some equipment (eg tents, stoves) can be borrowed or shared provided you advise the leader of this when booking.  For harder-graded walks, the leader has the right not to accept bookings from anyone they consider is not sufficiently fit or experienced to undertake it, so please provide as much relevant information as you can when booking.

Costs:
Members: Free.     Non-members:  $10.
Please pay the leader CASH at the start of the walk, NO credit cards.

Passengers must pay the driver their share of car-pooling costs as described on the Car-pooling page. Please bring cash for this purpose.
