Wild Places of Victoria – Virtual Club Night 4 May 2021

Expired

As a co-author of Lonely Planet’s Best Day Walks Australia, released in March 2021, Glenn van der Knijff is well qualified to share some of his experiences and images of his favourite wild places in Victoria – from the Great Ocean Road area, the Grampians, Wilson’s Promontory and the High Country at our May Club night.

Early morning over the upper Wonnangatta River valley, seen from Mt Speculation.

Glenn grew up in Bright, northeast Victoria, where through bushwalking and skiing he developed a love for the High Country. After studying cartography at RMIT in the 1980s, he first worked for outdoor map and guidebook publisher Algona Publications; some of you may recall their guides including:

  • Bogong National Park
  • Wonnangatta-Moroka National Park
  • Ski Touring Australia
  • Alpine Walking Track

Glenn then worked at WIld magazine in South Yarra for over eight years before moving onto Lonely Planet where he worked in-house in various roles for over 23 years. He now still works for Lonely Planet on a freelance basis.

Waves roll onto the beach near two rocky stacks close to Gibson Steps, with the waters of Bass Strait in the background, Great Ocean Road, Port Campbell National Park, Shipwreck Coast, southern Victoria

Since the 1980s Glenn has walked extensively in the Victorian Alps, and his knowledge led him to write Bushwalks in the Victorian Alps (2004) and Victoria’s Bogong High Plains (2016) for Open Spaces Publishing. He’s also spent a lot of time along the Great Ocean Road, in the Grampians and Wilsons Promontory, and has also completed walks in France, Switzerland, Canada, USA and Nepal.
