Adelaide Accommodated Trip: Easter Week

Expired

Trip Overview

Australia’s fifth largest capital city does not feature highly as a hiking destination. However, it is certainly worth a visit, with some beautiful beaches, fantastic food and wine and the mysterious Adelaide Hills. YHA Bushwalking has not ventured to Adelaide often. This trip will combine a selection of trips within Adelaide City and the surrounding country side. You have the choice of booking in for the whole trip, Part 1 only or Part 2 only:

Part 1: Thursday 28 March to Tuesday 2 April, 2024 (Easter)

Part 1 involves a selection of day hikes in and around Adelaide. Given the small size of Adelaide, these hikes may feel like an ‘urban hike’ or a ‘bushwalk’. Travel will be a mixture of public transport and taxi.

Part 2: Tuesday 2 April to Sunday 7 April, 2024

Part 2 involves a selection of day hikes further afield, generally involving an hour or so of driving using hire cars.

Trip leader and hike leader is Craig. Trip organiser and second in command is Doug.

For a copy of our trip flyer with full details of the trip, please contact the leader using the “Enquiry” button (see below).

Accommodation

We plan to stay in Adelaide for the entire trip. You will need to book and pay for your own accommodation.

You may wish to stay at Adelaide Central YHA. They have a variety of doubles, twins, dorms and private rooms. YHA hostels have generous cancellation policies; please check them for yourself. YHA hostels do have kitchen facilities, so you can self-cater if you wish. Any cancellations are between you and YHA Hostels.

Naturally, you can stay at a more upmarket place if you prefer. However, the hikes will begin from the hostel, so probably best to stay nearby.

If you would prefer to stay somewhere other than YHA, but would like to share with others to cut costs, then please reach out and I’ll put you in touch.

Transport

You will need to arrange your own transport to and from Adelaide. Flights are the best way to get there, although some of you may prefer the road less travelled and go by train or drive. Masochists can take a bus. Please make your own enquiries.

Part 1: Transport to and from the hikes will be a mixture of bus, train, tram and taxi, as the walks are in Adelaide’s metropolitan area. You will need to acquire a metroCARD, Adelaide’s ticketing system for public transport.

Part 2: Transport to and from the hikes will be hire cars, as these walks will be further afield. For this reason, the price for Part 2 will be $160 per person. Refer to Car Hire, below.

If anyone plans to drive their private car to Adelaide, they may do so, but we won’t be relying on using private cars for transport to and from hikes, due to the risk of the owner needing to cancel the trip at the last minute or becoming unwell during the trip.

Car Hire (part 2 only):

Car hire is required for four days: from Wednesday, 3 April to Saturday, 6 April. We have hired three mid-sized cars (such as Camrys, or small SUV’s) through Hertz.

YHA Bushwalking has a policy on car hire, which basically means we have designated drivers, we pay for no-excess insurance, and the cost is divided between all participants, regardless of whether they use the cars for each day or not. We have priced the trip on the assumption that we will have 12 to 15 people on the trip (4 to 5 people per car).

You will need to factor in an additional payment (allow $100 per person) to be made on the trip by you for fuel, additional driver fees, car parking (if any) and any other unforeseen car expenses.

ALL drivers will need to provide their details to the rental company, otherwise they will NOT be allowed to drive under any circumstances. If you offer to be a driver, it follows that you are expected to attend each hike (unless we have more than one driver per car, in which case a driver could have a rest day if another driver is doing the hike).
